Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I'm wondering how a cell phone vibrator works mechanically, not how to turn it on.

The same way any vibrator works. Its a small motor that spins but the piece that spins weighs more on one side making it unbalanced causing the vibration much like a washing machine on spin cycle with all the clothes on one side.

when you turn on the "manner mode" (vibrator), or if you turn on both ringtone and vibrator, once you get a call or text, your cellphone will vibrate (or release a tone and at the same time vibrates). this manner mode is really required for users to use it/activate it esp if s/he is a group of people, class, meetings, office, etc. so as not to disturb anybody else with the annoying ringtones (people who reacts on ringtones). you can activate it also during your bedtime so you wont be bothered when your sleeping.
