It's just another stereoype. Everyone's got them. Southerners are stupid because they talk slow and come from more rural areas. New Englanders are snobby, and abrasive. Californians are weird, and strange. These things exist no matter what part of the country you are from. If people would take the time to actually make some friends from these places, the stereotypes would gradually disappear. Just don't forget, @S$H0L3s can come from anywhere.

They don't. When they move down here they take off their shoes and start saying "you all" real quick. They love our warm weather and all the extra space. Because of the space every family has at least 3 cars. I'm still getting use to 2 story houses because we like to place our house all over the land and one story. We cried with New York about the Twin Towers' loss of life and the Pentagon with our loss of life there and the brave Americans that went down in Pennsylvania. Fort Polk sent some of the first men into Afghanistan and Texans were among some of the first to lose their life in battle. Whether the North likes us or not, we southerners love you guys. You gave us the New York Yankees and we gave you all the Dallas Cowboys. Now everybody has a team. You watch the northern border and we'll watch the southern border and keep this country safe.
Just call because all we need to hear is "Houston, we've got a problem."

Can't answer that one, because in the UK it is the other way round. It may have had some basis in fact once as all the top universities IE Oxford Cambridge are in the south, but it sounds like an outdated view of things now, for example John Logie Baird, was a Scotsman, He invented that little screen in your room in the 19200s called a Television. The only thing I would say with smaller communities there can be a bit more in breeding than in larger cities do not want to dwell on that, I have been to both New York a major City, when you go south people are naturally more laid back because of the weather, just my small observations as a Brit traveling there, I would say south people can be more friendly and I would trade that for IQ's any day.

I'm from Michigan and moved to North Carolina almost four years ago. I dont think that all Southerners are stupid, or that they dont own their cars, or anything else. Its just like in the North, some are some arent. I have to say though that there are more rednecks in Michigan than I have seen here so far. Its all about stereotyping and that kind of crap. There are large differences though and I guess it all depends on the ignorance of the person forming the opinion. However, ask yourself, as a Southerner, are there any stereotypes that you drop us Northerners into?

Negative stereotypes of the South is what it is. Look at how Southerners are portrayed in the media, in the movies? Hell, ever notice how a lot villains have a Southern accent? Take the movie Deliverance for example. We are either portrayed as stupid or as evil.
I know, I get mocked and made fun of for my accent because I talk with a Southern drawl. I don't think the Northerners realize they have an accent too.

the southerners do not think we are stupid they just take the rip. i lived in London for a long time and i used so say they lived the other side of watford i had no problem. yes there are a lot of snobs but as my father used to say plum in the mouth and nought in the wallet and yes we all know about 9/11 as maybe a lot of northerners lost family and friends as well. when you get to know these southerners they can be very genuine so do not knock them. try and make friends with them. christina

My family is originally from upstate NY and I have lived the past 30 of my 39 years in TN. Actually a lot of my family thought we would be driving the Beverly Hillbillies truck and later on the General Lee. I have remained close to many of my family members in NY and the myths are fading. Yet, they still think I am odd with this accent that stands out at any of our family reunions, that I go barefoot as often as possible and they still have not learned to understand the joy when one is given a "slaw dog".....There is a lot of cultural differences in the different regions of our country due to every area is settled by different nationalities and the pure geographic regions caused things to be different.
Peace.

No, only ignorant northerners assume anyone is stupid because of their accent, or for any reason of geography.
But you asked the question why, and I will answer it honestly, as a northerner. The Bible Belt is perceived to be largely a southern phenomenon, and is also perceived as extremely ignorant. This is partly the fundamentalists' own doing, as they make a big public show of being very weird about science and willing to give their children an inferior education which will hinder them later in life. If you can, as southerners, disavow this crazy creationist and "intelligent design" movement, you will put us back to admiring your quiet ways and warm nights, and those delicious accents.

I'm actually quite proud of my southern accent and my fondness for not wearing shoes :) Honestly don't care what northeners think about me and my "eccentricies", but I would like to know what northeners think.
