If you can seed an acre in 2.8 hrs, and I can seed an acre in 4.5 hrs, how long will it take if we work together?

Hi,

The formula for work is:

time..............time
together.....together
-----------.+.------------- = 1
A alone......B alone

For this problem, we have:

x..........x
-----.+.---- = 1
2.8....4.5

Multiplying by the LCD of 12.8 gives:

4.5x + 2.8x = 12.8
7.3x = 12.6
x = 12.6/7.3
x = 1.726 hours working together

I hope that helps!! :-)

1.726 hours

The time (in hours) it would to for the both of us to see 1 acre is: t=(4.5x2.8)/(4.5+2.8)
t=12.6/7.3
that is roughly 1.73 hour or 1 hour 44 minutes

Assuming that our both working simultaneously does not affect the rate at which either seeds,
my rate =1acre/2.8hrs acres per hr
your rate=1/4.5 acres per hr

hence total acres per hr=1/2.8+1/4.5=0.5793....
so total hours per acre=1/0.5793...=1.726....

in one equation this is 1/a+1/b=(a+b)/ab
so hrs per acre=ab/(a+b)
=2.8*4.5/(2.8+4.5)
=1.726....

t/2.8 + t/4.5 = 1
4.5t + 2.8t = 1(4.5)(2.8)
7.3t = 12.6
t = 1.73 hr.

(2.8*4.5)/(2.8+4.5)= 12.6/7.3= 1,762 hrs
