For those of you that live on Mars. The Home Run Derby is an event played prior to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. It is a contest among the top eight home run hitters in Major League Baseball to determine who can hit the most home runs. The event is sponsored by State Farm Insurance.

This year the contestants are the following. Prince Fielder is an enormous, powerful Brewer with lot of poise of July 8th, 2007, Fielder leads the National League with 29 home runs, one behind Alex Rodriguez for the Major League lead. He also ranks among the league leaders in RBI and he is top in slugging percentage. Vladamir Guerrero, a constant triple crown threat who is participating in his second Home Run Derby. Matt Holiday, the National League leader in Batting Average who still maintains power in his swing. Justin Morneau, arguably has the most powerful swing in this contest. When he hits it, he hits it hard. Going into All-Star Weekend, one third of Morneau's hits were home runs. Ryan Howard who is going for a repeat and has one of the most Powerful swings in the league. Howard will not be compete in the 2007 All-Star Game, only the Home Run Derby. Magglio Ordonez, by far the biggest surprise this year, the man is hitting .369 and has 70 Run Batted In. Albert Pujols, despite a 22 game home run drought this season, Albert Pujols is one of the most gifted in the game, arguably the best all-around player in the game. Finally, the man credited with "unlimited potential", Alex Rios. Alex Rios this season he is the epiphany of a 5-tool player.

My Prediction for the 2007 Home Run Derby is Ryan Howard. No, I am not a Phillies fan, in fact, I am the opposite, Go Marlins! Despite injuries and him not being an All-Star selection this season, he will win. Here are three special reasons why I believe Ryan Howard will repeat as Home Run Derby.

1) Ryan Howard does not need to deal with taking hours before the beginning of the Home Run Derby to take autographs and pictures. This will keep him focused and just need to deal with the task at hand. Not saying that you need a PhD to sign your name on a jersey or a picture but, he will only focus on winning.

2) He is coming from a Colorado because the Phillies just played a series against the Rockies. Unlike Prince Fielder or Albert Pujols, it is a very short distance from Colorado to San Francisco. This means he will get more rest.

3) He has something to prove! Him not being an All-Star is outlandish. In playing almost half of the games he could have without injury, he hit 21 home runs! If you double that, he will demolish Barry Bonds home run Record. This doesn't mean that if Ichiro hits two home runs in the first game he will hit 324 home runs.

I can't wait for tonight, be there and watch!
