Well here is the thing, first off both of these are about the same price $220-230. Secondly, they perform roughly the same in benchmarks, as provided. So in fact, this is pretty much a coin toss, unless you plan to overclock, then the Intel wins easily, otherwise take your pick.

An Intel Core 2 Duo would do the trick. They are much faster but, you will have to put up with all the heat it will conduct. If you have the right cooling system, it's the best idea. No matter what though, Intel Core 2 Duo is the better choice. AMD is much cheaper if you would like that, but Intel more preferred.

That AMD CPU at 3 GHz is likely to be faster on average than the 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo but might run rather hot.

go to a website that ranks processors (link below) to get a comprehensive guide as to their strengths and weaknesses... but considering you're asking the question here, and you're probably not going to look at another site, I will say this... Intel Core 2 Duo processors are in general better than their AMD X2 counterparts...

definitely the intel
they are ahead in technology currently, so their dual core processors are much better
i will actually be getting the 6600 soon
if you go to newegg.com, you will see that this is one of the highest rated processors
