My son is 2 months old and I played "housewife" for the past 2 years. I haven't worked for over a year and my son's father and I are splitting up. We're not married. I can't get enough milk pumped to last for any lengthy periods of time because he eats every bit of it. Now I have to find a job that supports us both on our own and I don't want to have to wean him to formula. What should I do?

Hi, you can start expressing milk right after you feed him. I know he eats it all, but the more you express, your body will have to produce more milk so you may be able to get more.

The World Health Organisation recommends breastfeeding for the first 2 years of life. Now that he has reached this point, perhaps you could wean him directly onto the milk you intend to feed him, i.e cows goats whatever. He is too old for formula, you have given him the best start already with your milk.

Have you thought about that or is it not an option?

This is a common occurrence. I would seek professional advice on the subject as there must be support groups and organizations to help single mom's (89% of all single parents are female). Also, depending on your location, and if all fails, the government has measures to help/protect people in your situation.

First off, get a work from home. Millions of ppl work from home. I actually have a job where I CAN work from home OR go into the office (I usually choose to go in - I'm a social butterfly). Second, I'd also try to start a home-based or CASH business to avoid paying taxes (regardless of your main form of revenue). Third, make sure it's something not too stressfull that requires very little manual/physical work. Completing surveys online might be a good start until you get a hold of something more profitable, that you really enjoy.

Although, beware of scams. Do not give out your credit card info or any other unncessary identity info unless the site begins with https:// as opposed to http://

I don't know where you are located but USAA, a military insurance co. is a GREAT employer and supports Moms w/ breastfeeding. They even have pumps located on campus for Moms for no charge!! They also pay pretty well. They are a call center though and only located in certain cities....San Antonio, Phoenix, Tampa....Good Luck and I am sorry to hear about your split. Make sure you try EVERYTHING including counseling before you do decide to divorce.

Are you having a sex change too? Okay, I am assuming you are posting under you baby's daddy's name.

I would say to supplement what you cannot produce with formula. Then pump as much as you can on breaks.

Formula is fine if you cannot breastfeed, but breast milk is better if you can provide it.

As lois mentioned you can also use someone else's breast milk. However this is often expensive because most people sell it...weird, but they make a lot of money off of it.

There are more and more businesses today looking for people to work from the home in secretarial-type duties. Also, some businesses have built-in day care where they allow time during the workday for the mom to go breastfeed in the daycare facility room.

You have three choices: breast pump, live under a bridge until he's ready for real food, or do what you have to do and put the kid on formula (which is just as good) and get your butt to work so you can have a roof over his head.

Quit using the baby as an excuse not to do what you are supposed to be doing.
