My standard transmission 2000 Sunfire will only start if the gas pedal is pushed down. Also it will only run with the gas pedal pushed down. (It dies when the pedal is let up)

Is this a fuel pump problem? Or what else could it be?

Thanks,
Sean

Vacuum leak at the intake manifold. (look for a hose that may have come off)
Or, EGR valve is stuck open.

Did this start doing it all of a sudden one morning?
Or did you do something to cause it to happen without knowing it?(under the hood)

ADDED:
It's not the fuel pump, or filter.
If it were, it would idle, but not accelerate.

if the fuel filter is clogged and is needing to be replaced, then pushing more fuel by activating the pump harder will start it. But, the answer is replacing the filter, will eliminate the stalls your probably having also. If the car dies while driving, then, usually the pump, and replace the filter at the same time.
