In most cases you should use the metric system due to the fact that it is so widely used within the world today. The only case I would say to use the Imperial System (English System) would be in the case that you are doing calculations that will actually be used in the US, and even then you still might want to consider the metric system.

The merit of the English system is that the quanities are anthropomorphic, making them convenient. For example, a "mile" is a fair distance when walking/travelling, a yard is useful for measuring large things, feet are useful for man-sized things, and inches for things smaller than your hand. With the metric system, the divisions are based on orders of magnitude, so instead of "6 feet" I am 1.83 meters tall, or 183 cm tall. The merit of the metric system is that everyone learns base ten mathematics using the ten symbols 0-9. If this weren't the case, then the metric system would not be special, for example 5 feet 7 inches is 5.7ft in a base twelve counting system.

The Metric ( S.I.) system is always more convenient to use. That's because it is the system of units recognised by scientists all around the world and also u will find those used in good books.
I don't know the merits of the English system as I don't use them. But it does require some calculation when asked to convert pounds(lbs) to kilo-grams (kg)

The Metric system is more convenient as it's in multiples of 10 in measurements of currency, length, volume, area and mass ..etc.
A kilometer is much easier to deal with than a mile in its measurement.
However, I'm a Brit born and bred in the UK and, I was brought up using Imperial measurements.
My job, however took me to various places where Metric and US systems are used and fortunately, I soon was able to become conversant with all three systems and their conversions from one to another.
Older folk (not that I'm young), find it difficult to convert and, I believe that, the figures should be provided in both Metric and Imperial for their convenience.
