Your best bet is to phone the leisure centre your planning on taking her to and ask if they have any regulations, we also were eager to take our lil one swimming so i called the local baths and they said if she's had her first injections then by all means bring her along.
Also you will only be able to stay in for about 15 mins to begin with as your baby can get cold and the chlorine starts to effect their skin.
Our baby is 8 months now and she stays in for about 25-30 mins then we warm her up in the shower which she loves.

It is exciting being a parent and wanting to do activities with your kids but you should only take her after 6 months. Their little immune systems are not strong enough to cope with all the germs in the water (especially public pools). Plus, their bodies cannot regulate temperatures like adults do so the water will feel alot colder quicker (does that make sense?) than if an adult were swimming. We took ours at seven months - there is no way I can imagine taking a little baby swimming at six weeks.

The imms issue is out of date. They used to be given a live polio vacine that could be transfered to other people, but the new 5 in 1 is not live so there is not a problem now.
If your child catches anything from a swimming pool it is likely to be a common cold and none of the jabs protect against this anyway.
Just check the temperature of the water. the pools that are down at 26 degrees are cold for a baby. 32 is far better if you can find a pool that warm.
Enjoy!

Hi,
I took both of mine early to Waterbabies. There was a wee one there who was a week old! (Although she did sleep through the class in the water) As long as your wee one has a wetsuit on to keep them warm and it is a public pool then fine. Needs to be a public pool as it contains the right regulations of chlorine so nasty things can get to your wee cherub.....happy splashing! Suzanne

I was wondering the same thing myself. But after reading the other answers, Id say wait until at least first set, maybe closer to 6 mos old. They do need sunblock and do not need the bacteria from the pools, lakes, whatever.
I have put mine in my very clean bathtub so I would think a very clean warm kiddie pool may work too for now.
My plan is to wait, I hope yours will be too. Thanks for asking this question.

way too early. your child is suseptable to many more diseases and infections than a 6 month old baby. if you want to put her in the water, get a baby pool-- but don't go out in public. Also, be advised, doctors do NOT recommend sun tan lotion under 6 months of age. that should tell you something. consult your doctor. you know what they'll say. plus, your child most likely wont take to it well. babies don't like overstimulation and going to the pool is quite stimulating.

Yes, it Absolutely is!!
You must protect young babies from infection!! take a bath with her a shower etc but 6 weeks they are still very susceptible to infectious diseases.. paddling & swimming pools are notorious for breeding infection- Also watch out for the sun!!!
enjoy the babe they are precious.

I would be very careful taking a baby into a public pool !! They are very dirty and full of germs. Babies also tend to swallow a lot of water at that age, which could potentially be very harmful. Here is another hint for the day.....Have you ever tried the web site www.Diapers.com ? I use them all of the time to buy diapers and baby supplies. They are cheaper than Walmart. If you do try them out, use Referral Code: BRST3227 and Save $5.00 off on your first order !!! Bless you and have a nice weekend !!

It all depends on what water she is going into. A lake? Ocean? A warm little kiddie pool should be ok if it's warm outside but other than that, I think it's too risky due to various bacteria in the water and the fact that the water in the lakes and ocean is way too cold for a 6 week old even with a wet suit
