well, not exactly eyelash but similar, on sale and would like to make a scarf for her but I don't have a pattern so I'm just not sure how long it should be.

The neat thing about making scarves is you don't really need a pattern, just make it as wide as you think will be good for the person's size. If knitting about 8 stitches on a larger sized needles and knit in garter stitch until it is the length you want (long enough to hang down to about the waist and wrap once around the neck), then bind off. The same goes for crochet.

I have been teaching a group of coworkers to knit and one of my friends just knit a darling eyelash type yarn scarf for her 5 year old niece.

I've seen 31 and 18, so I think you get to decide. Personally I think 18 is not very long. If it's pretty, she'll want to be able to see the ends.
