That does seem way too high. Get at least 5 or 6 written estimates detailing exactly what is included in the price.

Prices are always higher during the summer when it is hot and people need the service. The best time to change out the system is in the fall or the winter.
You should be able to find a generic brand at around $4000.
Check around and call some independent dealers and don't be afraid to bargain.
If your duct work does not need to be changed out, this will save some bucks.

Does sound high, but this is middle of summer. If you can;t wait. Get a couple of estmiates. Ask each contractor the same types of questions. Ask them for documentaion why they are sizing the unit for your house. Did they do a cool/heat load!!!! What are each contractor offering???? The higher one may be replacing ductwork, offering high eff, other controls like humidity and higher filtration. What is warranty on units. Alot of contractors try to offer finacing or 6 months same as cash etc. Ask them what their cash price is. After all, same as cash means they have financing built in and they usually have a fee they have to pay for these services. Mainly make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

If this is just the unit and not duct work, that price seems really high. I had a name brand furnace and AC unit including some new return air ducts installed for less than that. The house was 1600 square feet.
