is there any story that carries over, or anything I would not under stand if I skip the first one? or are they like final fantasy games where each one is independent of the previous one?

No, the stories are completely unrelated. In fact, I played DC2 before I played DC1. (In my opinion, DC2 is a much better game, but they are both great). I highly recommend DC2, it is a fun and addictive game. I beat it about 3 years ago, and just recently got it out for a 2nd playthrough.

Kudos for being interested in some classic games. I would recommend the first, if you are into a simpler experience and a feel for the original game, but the second is undoubtedly better, seeing as how the developers had a chance to fix some important things wrong with the first. The original also has some unique game play that is changed in the sequel. It really is up to you though, based on what you are looking for.

Dark Cloud 2 has no relation to the first one except game play. I would play the first one because it is real different from the second one. Other than that you dont need to play the first to understand the second game
