Yes, there are plenty of folks to talk to in game. However, unlike a lot of MMORPGs, the fighting areas are instanced, meaning that once you leave town you are in your own private copy of the world. You will not encounter any other players in the missions or explorable areas unless they are in your own party.

The towns are the social areas. In town you'll see other players and can invite them into your party, trade with them or just chat. When you leave town, the players in your party go with you into the instance.

Teamspeak and Ventrillo are commonly used to talk to others. A lot of the established guilds have their own TS or Vent servers and for high level PvP action its almost required.

I play most of the MMOs, and keep coming back to WoW for some reason.

GW - Nice eye candy, 1 week to grind to 20, 2 years to gear up (20 MM and a 20 EN), pretty extensive world, but a bit more repetitive than WoW, Pretty easy to get the gear you want with PUGs(pick up groups), although a guild is necessary for some of them.

CoH/CoV - Very nice eye candy, fun to play for a while, no "gear", latest attempt to copy wow with crafted socketing is a lame attempt, and the most repetitive grinding experience ever, pvp is pathetic, roll a stalker woohoo. (11 50s on 2 accts)

WoW - Massive world, pretty weak graphics which still doesn't explain the famous Shattrath lag, Progression is a PITA sometimes, my guild just finished Gruuls and we're moving on to the eye, and gruuls was pretty rough to get down. PvP and Arena are pretty fun (Well geared 70 Orc BM hunter, Very well geared 70 BE Lock)

It all comes down to personal taste, I spent quite a bit of time between the 3 of those, and like I said, I keep coming back to WoW. Right now my excuse it trying to get my lock geared up with season 2 arena gear( my hunter is geared with season 1, but I don't him that much these days, probably because he gets laughed at because of his tiny shoulders) Over 8million people can't be wrong.

Yes, there are other people in the game that you can talk to like in WoW

Actually WoW isn't that great at all (played 1.5 years), i don't know how you could think it has depth, the entire game is just level/gear/money grinding, that's all, really linear, and time consuming towards the end.. community is horrible too.. but you can continue playing, your choice, i just went ahead and ditched it, really glad i did, such a blown up game

World of Warcraft Pros- Much more depth, longer enjoyment, lvl 70 cap, more intuitive.
Cons-Monthly Fee

Guild Wars Pros- No monthly fee, more equality between players
Cons- lvl 20 cap, not as deep, smaller game
