or whatever i want if i'm running out of hard drive space? is that memory, or should i get an external drive?

The obvious answer is Apple.
The better answer is: Go to Crucial, Ultra or Kensington and see if they have compatible memory that is cheaper than Apple.

You're probably not allowed to open your computer, thanks to Apple. If you can, and are fine with probably voiding some warranty, then you can buy it at a computer store, like CompUSA or Best Buy.
