Because it's not Canada!

Actually, my answer is much different than some of the others who responded. My answer has nothing to do with politics, and is very simple: America is going to hell in a handbasket because todays' 'new' adults do not teach their children right from wrong, basic common courtesy, manners, or morality. It's all about "what's in it for me" and I find it very disheartening. When I was growing up in the 1960's, my mother would have tanned my hide if I disrespected an adult. In fact, there was one time when I gave an adult neighbor "the finger". I was grounded for a week, and had trouble sitting down for a day. This is just an example of what I'm talking about.

If today's parents (generally speaking) took an interest in what their kids are doing when they are outside "playing", they would see that their kids are swearing, throwing rocks at passing cars, or worse - depending on the age of the child.

It all boils down to lack of respect for others, as well as themselves. That is something that the parents should teach their children. Keep within the law, and repsect others and yourself.

This was a good question - thanks for asking.

This question literally screams out for thesis !!
But, I will spare you my normal dissertations here
---You can see from the answers already posted
that each and every "side" of the current political
spectrum feels that THEY and they alone have the
focus on what the REAL America should be !!!
And, then there are a GREAT number of people
who couldn't possibly care less -- like rf said earlier
herein ---- APATHY ----
Then there is the rapid moral decay -- where money
sex and status have taken over the center ring of the
circus and are far more important than living meaningful
lives of productive work and caring service !!
We have taken God away from our children and then sit
wondering why there are so many godless children !!!
We are turning into a nation of overweight, overindulged,
pleasure addicts --- literally fiddling while Rome burns !!!

So -- short version
Political Polarization
Apathy
Moral Decay
Overt Self Indulgence

Like we need to be taking THIS KIND OF SYSTEM TO ANY OTHER PLACE !!!!!

Because the people need to do something. Being against bush or the war isn't gonna help you at all. Try being for something instead and back it up with action. All the complaining does nothing. Implement a plan of action or do whatever it takes. but don't be a martyr.

And for Christ sake stop glorifying all these solders. The ones who kill for their country have been portrayed in the media as being the most honorable of men. It's similar to how a street gang works, only in a much larger, and much more destructive scale. America is the big gang of the world. And as in a street gang, the ones who have killed get tattoo's to show their devotion and are highly respected in the underworld. It's the same thing America has done with the people that kill for them in the political world. They get medals of honor and are made out to be the greatest men. In all actuality the way we see a soldier should be no different from the ones who do the killing on a smaller scale on the streets. It's the exact same mentality only we've been brought up to view soldiers as good and gang members as bad. Obviously if gangs ran the media and education system and prisons and everything else it would be different.

i'm sorry for ranting on.

well thats my take on it. A small piece of it

Because we have our priorities all screwed up.

We argue about abortion, flag burning, prayer in school, even immigration which does not affect the vast majority of us while we ignore our childrens future.

Case in point.

In 20 years China has gone from an economic joke to world class. They did that with a series of 5 year plans.

Our plans are few and the one glaring example of one that we have is Cheney's secret energy plan.

While the average Chinese person has a rough idea what the government plans and can find details on the web and any number of government publications, while the average American has no idea what the hell is going on.

Who do you think is smarter, China or the USA?

Signed, and ex pat living in the heart of China

Peace

Well I am of the opinion that it started at home... Very few people think its necessary to teach there children respect, manners or responsibility. It seems that parents are too busy with work to take time with there children so the children look elsewhere for guidance and way too often they find it in the wrong place. Yes the children are our future, so without basic morals.... well you see what we are getting.

Because too many have forgotten what it means to be an American. Everyone has their hand out, looking for their share. No one wishes to take responsibility for what they do, as long as someone else is paying for it.

In short, what is wrong with this country is that Baby Boomers, the greediest bunch of a**holes ever born, are running it. Their motto, since they were pushed out of the womb, has been "Me, Me, It's All About Me, Give It To Me, It's Mine, I Don't Care What It Costs You, Just Give It To Me Because I Deserve It," and that is leading this country to ruin, especially as they turn into senior citizens.

THE ULTIMATE EVIL IS THAT MASKED FORM OF PSYCHOLOGICAL COMPLACENCY THAT ENABLES ONE TO ADHERE TO A GROUP PHILOSOPHY RATHER THAN EKE OUT ONE'S OWN HORIZONS!!!

simply put: w/ america...
we need to take what we make.. if it is of an integer value greater than one such that x/40,000 a year can be handed to x-1 human beings such that (x-1)(x+1) = e delinearized such that circumstance in association w/ e=mc^2 = z = x.0 = sense life of just for oNcE in ppl's lives adhering to the fact that it makes a rediculous amount of integrity in the cosmic superlative to annunciate "sin" through the alleviation of need for more than it is you are able to personally appropriate as a tactic derived from the creationistic strategy that purports the "significance" of matters pertaining to the limits placed on supposed benefits of the spiritual kind such that we must not ever really exist as "star people".. nor even as our own form of individual solace through conservatism of "personality" per se.. but to just use ourselves where it concerns ourselves for what life can bring through owing to the sanskar or karmic latencies of our own prophesized self worth.

Let's see.

-Politics and religion have become inseparable, splintering the nation

-Indifference to globalization and environmental concerns

-Oil

-Governmental leaders lie and people still elect them

-Our role models are actors and athletes, who do illusory, imaginary things

-Labor is exploited by a small greed-filled upper class

-Resistance to social progress: some Americans feel their lifestyle is threatened by minority groups and homosexuals and actively persecute them

-Materialism is praised over compassion and humility

-Lack of education in the arts

-A general lack of consideration and patience: "I want it my way, and I want it now."

-Feelings of powerlessness in the governmental process

-An unpopular war

-Credit card debt

-General name calling and finger pointing between interests groups (e.g. Liberals blaming conservatives and conservatives blaming liberals) deflects attention and action from resolving real issues

I know that's not all of it, but it's a good start.

No, it is not being unpatriotic in any respect. it is being sensible. you recognize the disaster that our usa has created and we proceed to pass downhill. it is going to take plenty to tutor this usa around. the unhappy ingredient is our Presidential applicants are no longer the suited human beings to end this.
