If you are traveling on an international flight, and laying over to another international flight, you won't be allowed to leave the airport for security reasons.

Be aware of the timing issues, (I wouldn't want you to miss your plane!) but if you want to get into London for a bit....

Take the Heathrow Express (about £16 for a day return) which brings you into Paddington Station in about 20 minutes. From there you can get the Underground (Bakerloo line) straight down to Piccadilly Circus or Charing Cross (takes about 20 minutes). Once there, you can take in some sights - walk down to Trafalgar Square, pop into the National Gallery (it's free) if you like, peer down The Mall to Buckingham Palace, then walk round to Covent Garden. CG is always bustling with people and perform artists. Have a coffee or something. Then walk back to Charing Cross and get the Bakerloo line back to Paddington Station.

Alternatively, if you think you'll be too pushed for time... take the Heathrow Express to Paddington. From here you can walk to Kensington Gardens (5 minute walk). Here you can walk around the beautful park and visit the famous statue of Peter Pan. You can walk through the park to Kensington Palace (about a ten minute walk) and have a quick bite to eat or drink at the Orangery. It's quintessential English and might be just the ticket for a quick stop. Also as you are going on a Sunday, the road bordering the park (Baywater Road - between Paddington Station and the park) hosts a really long open art gallery. It's largely full of crap, but you sometimes see some really gems. Regardless, it is quite fun! And you can buy a cheap souvenier!

Have fun whatever you decide!

There's no point leaving the airport because of security. 5 hours isn't that long, I've had longer delays. You'll just have to look around the shops. You can also get tickets to the upper class lounges for a few hours for about £20 which might be better.
