Unless cataclysmic events happen, the chances are very slim. They have too much ground to make up against the Red Sox, who are "for real" this year without a doubt. Unlike the 1978 Yankees (who were in the two-division AL at the time)they're also way behind in the wild-card race. They have to get past Seattle, Minnesota, Cleveland and Oakland. This further complicates things.
The Red Sox aren't going to fall apart this year, as they did in 2006. Having Dice-K instead of Rudy Seanez on the pitching staff is a big time upgrade. Matt Clement helps the Red Sox by staying on the DL. David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez no longer have to shoulder such a huge burden---their HR/RBI numbers are way down, but their other stats are up, and there's less pressure on those two. Jason Varitek is having a nice rebound from his 2006 off-year, and Coco Crisp is actually hitting the ball, at long last. (He was hitting .220 just weeks ago.) Mike Lowell is awesome offensively and defensively. Also, the Red Sox are getting their legitimate team slumps over before the all-Star break . . . and as the Red Sox lost games, so did the Yankees. Ouch!
So . . . the Yankees will not give up, but for all this huge talent they have, they just don't have that chemistry, that oomph, that tight unit. The pitching isn't as bad as some people say, but it's badly mediocre by historic Yankees standards.
My projection: 86-76, a nice rally after a horrid first half, but too little too late. That kind of record will likely get you a Wild Card berth in the NL, but not in the AL. Red Sox win everything with a 102-60 regular season record, have little problem beating the Oakland A's and the Detroit Tigers in the ALDS and ALCS, and beat the San Diego Padres in 6 games in the World Series.

Not good. A couple of months ago I really thought it was possible for the Yanks to win the division if they could get to within 4 or 5 games out by the break. That didn't happen The Yanks are going to have to play great ball down the stretch and catch more than a couple of breaks to get into the post season. Once they get in the playoff then the Yanks can very possibly win the WS. The Cards were what ? 83-78 last year and they won it all .So once a team gets to the playoffs ,anything is possible

Well they simply aren't better than the Red Sox, Tigers, Indians, or Angels but I'll give em a 16% chance
You never know, maybe Vlad will get injured. It's happened before and that team is garbage without him.

There is too much talent to continue they way its been. After the all star break we're going to witness the most epic comeback in baseball history as the Yankees surge and the Washington Generals (AKA the Boston Red Sox) fall completly apart.
