It is done to "tease". Even though shows are "voice tracked" (pre-recorded), 99.9999% of the DJ's do their homework and are on top of the order the computer will spit things out. So by announcing a song that won't be played for a while, they will have you tuned in a longer period of time waiting for that song... it fights your impulse to flip stations. The goal is to get you thinking, "I want switch to xyz station, but the DJ said abc song is comming up, so I'll keep listening to this one instead of switching."

As far as other comments of all this pre-recorded stuff, it's true, but most DJs are hard working individuals. If the weather changes, they will update their voice tracking to reflect that change. If some major event happens, they will come into the station to update thier voice tracking to be current. Even though many shows are voice tracked, many stations know how important it is to have someone in studio. Breaks may be recorded, but the DJ is still in studio recording those breaks just prior to insertion to the program. So the show still is essentially live. And stations still do have times where they are open for requests and accomodate requests with an announcer in studio.

First off, DJs dont play what they want. Every station out there has music scheduled, sometimes days in advance. So in all honesty your request dont really mean anything. People say radio plays the same songs over and over. Well radio is designed to be that way. The average listener listens between 8-14 minutes. As far asthe DJs go, sometimes at the end of the song the jock will announce what song was played. Or sometimes they will annonce what song is coming up.

It is because they have the show voice tracked. This can be recorded locally or somewhere and just sent via T1 line to the stations. It works this way. The DJ is in a recording booth with a list of the songs and chat lines to use. This is likely why you hear it this way because somehow he or she has made a mistake in not including a song they announced. Then the whole show will be off. A good tip off to a "voice tracked" show is when a local announcer pops in with the weather or other information and not the DJ on the air. That is because he is probably home and not on the air at that time anywhere.

You tease with what is coming up but not the very next one so if you want to hear it you keep listening.
You UP announce to tell what is playing now.
You BACK announce for what has been played for those who missed it.
Most don't do that anymore and most stations are computer generated meaning the computer plays what it has programed and the DJ has no or very little choice. Sometimes you may bypass one or two but not that many.
Radio used to be FUN to listen to and FUN to do.
Not any more.

The ones that that do, it draws attention sometimes and they may mention the best first, but save it fir last. They are olny telling you what songs are comming up. Do they say that these songs will be played in that order? i.e.: next is "such a song" then "this one" and then I'll platy "that one" ?
Unless they say next is " such a song and then finally, the #1 song by such a group" After 35 years listening to radio, you learn simple things like this.

To draw you in and make you listen. They will usually pick the most popular song to announce first and play last.

They don't do that here. Maybe it is just the station you listen to.
