Was it from 1917 (beginning of Communist party rule) to 1956 (when some other Russian leader ordered the de-Stalinizations)? Please help!

Officially, from 1917 to 1991, though one could argue that Gorbachev's "glastnost" effectively derailed communism sometime during the 1980's.

The Soviet Union was officially founded in 1922 after a revolt lasting from 1917-1921 against the Czar. The Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991.

No, it lasted until the late 1980s. I watched the Berlin Wall being torn down from my hospital bed in 1989, but I'm not sure exactly when you would say the Communists lost it. An English-speaking Russian can probably tell you when the party was officially banned in Russia, but it was the late 1980s. So they were a communist country for more than 70 years.
