I guess he switched because she really wasnt keeping the Similac Advance down that easily. As far as I no there isnt any medical condition on why i cant pump and give her the milk.

That is YOUR decision on whether to give your baby formula or breast milk. If he is making decisions for you now he will only continue to raise your child FOR you. Go to another ped and unless there is a medical NECESSITY breastfeed your child if that is YOUR choice!!

Nothing is better for a baby than breastmilk, especially the first few days, as it has so many nutrients and contains traces of so many immunal benefits that only breast milk can contain.

Why the doctor switched the baby to formula you did not say. Are you on medication? Do you have some condition? There is no way I would say switch back to breast milk unless I knew exactly why the baby was switched to formula in the first place. This is something you need to discuss with a medical professional, and make sure you have a good one too. I would see a pediatrician if I were you.

Is it because you don't have enough milk? You could do both if that's the case--give breast milk and follow with a little formula.

I personally breastfed all three of my kids for almost 2 years each. They say it helps develop the brain as well. That must be true because I have 3 of the brightest kids you'll ever meet!

First off it's really important to know why did he say your baby can't have breastmilk? Is there a medical reasoning behind it? It's very rare for a baby not to have breastmilk due to a medical reason. I think we need to know more about your situation to give you an adequate answer.

eta- ok now why in the world did he say give her formula? Breastmilk is all your baby needs right now. If you are supplementing with formula you are really hurting your breastmilk supply. I would seriously recommend a new ped, he doesn't seem very supportive of breastfeeding and it seems obvsious you want to give your child breastmilk. Are you just pumping or are you actually breastfeeding? because if you are just pumping, this is very had in the beginning since a pump isn't as effective as a baby nursing. If your baby isn't nursing at the breast, is there a reason why?

Unless there's a medical reason why she can't have breastmilk, I wouldn't give her any formula at all at this point. Giving her formula will hurt your ability to build up a good milk supply and you'll end up having to give her formula whether you want to or not.

If you *want* to feed her formula, that's one thing, but it sounds like you want to breastfeed and your doctor doesn't sound very supportive of that. I would look for another doctor, personally. It's possible to successfully give a baby both formula and breastmilk, but if you want to do that, it's usually better to start exclusively with breastmilk (straight from the breast, preferably, not via bottle, or you might end up with nipple confusion) and add the formula in when she's a few weeks old and your milk supply has become steady.

ETA: By the way, "she won't get enough food without formula" isn't really a good medical reason, since, with fairly rare exceptions, your body produces as much milk as your baby needs, and feeding her formula will cause you to produce less. The best way to ensure that she gets enough food via breastfeeding is to breastfeed her - the combination of nipple stimulation by her mouth and emptying the breasts is what causes more milk to be produced.

Why did the doctor give her the alimentum?
I can't answer until I know why. Breast milk is easiest to digest- and if the alimentum is for colic, I would skip that and stick to breastfeeding for colic. I wish I had for our son. He had severe colic and the alimentum did little. He was better on the breast. That was nearly 11 years ago and I didn't know you could switch the baby back to the breast.

Call your doctor to find out for sure.

I would stick to the breastmilk... Maybe, cut some of the more gassy foods from your diet... Like cabbage, cauliflower/broccolli and beans... That might help.. Besides, have you seen the price of Similac and all it's formula friends.. It's insane ! If you think you must buy formula go to similac.com and get the money saving coupons mailed to your house.. You can register yourself, baby, siblings, husband and pet... Get all the coupons you can.. You can also purchase coupons on e-bay.. Good luck

I wouldn't be giving any formula over breastmilk, period. If you need to supplement for some reason, are there are no contraindictions to breastmilk (there shouldn't be), then continue nursing. ANY breastmilk is better than none!!

i disagree with the statement there must "be a reason why the doc said formula"

this doc obviously isn't educated about breastfeeding and it's benefits nor does he care

just put baby to your breast!....the pump won't accomplish what baby can

don't give up and good luck

You should call you doctor and ask him because there is a reason he switched her in the first place.
