The US is a huge country with many many different things to do. I would say it all depends on what you are looking for.
Summer in the US is hot no matter where you go, with the exception of some place in Alaska.
If you are looking to see American history - -You can hit places like Boston and visit the historical monuments there, Philadelphia and see the Liberty Bell. New York and see south street seaport and the ships.
Williamsburg Virgina, that has a theme park dedicated to Colonial times.
If you are looking to gamble - Atlantic City in New Jersey. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun Casinos in Connecticut. And of course there is always Las Vegas.
If you are looking for family oriented theme parks, there are Great Adventure parks all over the country as well as Theme parks in Orlando Florida. Most recognizable being Disney, but also Universal Studios and other local parks.
I heard that there are places in the mid west that you can mine for gold and even diamonds.
California is a huge and beautiful state, you can visit the glitz of Hollywood in Los Angeles, the Trolleys in San Francisco, or the wine country in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys.
There are National Parks dotted all over the west from Nevada up through Wyoming and South Dakota.
I personally would do the touristy Disney, but then again I love Disney world.

If you are coming to America, the Grand Canyon is a must to see because pictures cannot describe it beauty and vastness. Also, Niagara Falls is breathtakingly beautiful, on the Canadian side, and in the summer, it's hopping with people from everywhere. About a half hour away is Niagara on the Lake (wine country) Quaint shops restaurants, Bed & Breakfasts and cafes brimming with flowers. It's Picture perfect.
As for excitement, New York city is great and safe. Every where you look, you are reminded of something that you saw on screen, including celebrities. People are exceptionally friendly and the ambiance is great. It's one of the most creative places in terms of the fashion and design world. There's so much to see and do in New York and the food (especially the delys) and shopping are amazing.
Parking is ridiculously expensive so don't drive or rent a car in the New York city. Take taxis and blend in with the New Yorkers. Upscale urban families with kids, who live in Manhattan, take taxis everywhere they go. It's a different kind of world and the pace is so fast. It's dynamic if you like to be on the move all the time. Hotels are expensive, if you're going in peak season and have to be booked well in advance. If money is an issue, get a hotel in New Jersey and taxi into New York each day.

As everyone else has said, the US is a very large country with an equally diverse selection of recreational choices and your question is a bit difficult for us to answer without more specific information as to what your interests are and/or what you would like to do on your vacation. Are you looking at a beach vacation or camping in the woods? Visiting the big city or a small town? More interested in history and culture or gambling and/or amusement parks? Etc., etc. Anyhow, I always promote my home state of Michigan as an ideal vacation site and, for the record, you can find everything I just mentioned in Michigan; as other people have mentioned, most tourists head elsewhere so we are not as busy and the costs are usually much more reasonable than are found on either coast. Anyhow, check out our state web-site below and feel free to e-mail with me with any questions; I know most of Michigan fairly well.

It depends on what your looking to do
Most people visit new york, california, hawaii, florida, and nevada..
I myself would recommend going to Las Vegas (Nevada) or New York City..or possibly even Chicago..they are going to offer the most culture and experience then most other places being as people from all walks of life are there
If your looking for parties and beaches..check out the Jersey Shore..and from there you can get to New York City

And if you prefer nature instead of culture, check out the northern Midwest. Yellowstone National Park, the Black Hills and of course, the Grand Canyon. Camping and hiking are exceptional and varied. You can choose the length of your hike or camping experience. These sights and experiences are wonderful for the kids and something they will remember forever.
