I'm a teenager and i don't think i can get a job now. My family and i are going on a small vacation to see my relatives, but i think that's it. I might be going to the movies a couple of times, but otherwise i've just been reading and doing crafts. It's getting boring though. What can i do? What do normal teenagers do with their summer?

First off, your avatar doesn't tell us your sex, and with summer activities, that matters a lot.

Volunteer opportunities are all over the place. My kids volunteered at the animal shelter and the hospital. Retirement communities need lots of help.

Our community has day camps for kids that would otherwise need day care (8-14). They do lots of outside stuff and have field trips once a week. It's a great place to find a job.

Do you swim? My daughter is making $35/half hour teaching private swim lessons. More kids, higher charge. All it takes is good swim skills and taking a training class. You can guard, teach classes, or lifeguard during parties at peoples' homes.

With my son, he's had a part-time job helping the schools prepare their band instruments for next year. Lots and lots and lots of instruments. But when he's free, he's taking apart computers to get one good running unit. Dad goes to the library and checks out books that are on the summer reading list. He only had to read one, and he did that already, but now he's read 3-4. The books on that list are very interesting. He usually finishes them in one day (or night). Dad picks up free DVDs from the library too. They have the new ones, too.

Baby sitting, dog walking, lawn mowing, gardening are all activites that pay well if you don't mind getting hot and sweaty.

I'm teaching myself to arrange flowers. I have a text book and I'm making each arrangement as I go so I can learn how it's done. It's really expensive, though, unless you have a source for free fresh flowers.

Teach yourself to cook. You don't KNOW how popular you will be in college if you can cook, because NOBODY else can. Start with brownies and mac n cheese, then go on to scrambled eggs and breakfast tacos. Then try cookies. I'm sure there's a cookbook around the house. Use it.

Use this time to gather some new skills and make yourself a better person. You don't have to work the whole time. There are lots of activities--like your arts & crafts where you learn and it may come in handy. My hus teaches Sunday school, and all the crafts I did as a teenager are the crafts he's doing with his kids in Sunday school. Any kind of skill will one day come in handy.

Have a happy summer!
Debbie

Just find a couple of friends to hang out with everyday or hang out with a bf/gf, or travel. I have a job and i work Tuesday-Friday, but i still take vacation days so that i can get off Thursday and Friday and travel. Like right now i am visiting New Orleans. Another thing that i have done this summer is finish my scrapbook of all the pictures i took over this past school year and through the summer. I went to a summer camp at the beginning of summer, i mean the possibilities are just endless.

Become involved with your community or church. They have tons of stuff to keep you busy. "Habitat for Humanity" would love to hear from people like you. You'd be helping those in need and it will look outstanding on a resume some day.

Train for a marathon or triathlon that will start up down the road. That will consume a good part of your day.

As for the normal teenager, well they just hang with other teenagers....either at each others houses, malls or movies. They go swimming, ride bikes, roller blade...etc.

Well some go to camp, it sounds corny but it can actually be fun and you can meet so many new people and get away for up to 2 weeks, if you're interested in babysitting you can post an ad on "kijiji", people always need babysitters and you can make some extra cash for clothes etc... I totally agree, sometime summer can be dull but try swimming, picnics or going to the mall, best wishes, enjoy your summer!

You could trace your family tree,
take a class at the local recreation club (they offer all sorts of stuff),
plant flowers in your yard,
volunteer at the local Red Cross or other organization.
