I use semi-synthetic oil, which is good for about 10000 km (15000 miles?). But the last time, I told them not to change the oil filter. "There's no ned to change it verytime", I said. Now I'm worried about it. Can I have real problems because of it? Should I go and chnage the filter before something wrong happens? Or is it just a detail and you don't really have to change it everytime you cnage the oil? Thanks.

Just some more details: Thanks a lot to all those who've already answered eeven though it's not entirely conclusive. Just tell me this and only tell me if you really know: should I *really* go and change the filter now even though the oil has already been changed? Should I change the oil and the filter even though the oil has been changed like 1000 km before? Should I just leave it at that because even though it may not be very healthy for the car it won't damage it deeply? I really need to know...

It's false economy not to change it. You're talking under $10 at the most. (More likely $3 to $5) If you don't change it, you introduce dirty oil back into the system when you start it up since that trapped in the filter doesn't drain out.

Change Oil Filter Every Time

As a former automotive instructor, we had performed expirements on engines regarding oil and filter changes. We had a number of engines that clocked in well over 200K miles where only the oil filter was religiously changed. It showed that the most critical part of the equation was the filter. With today's technology on developing extended mileage oils, oil is not the issue. Removing dirt and contaminats from the engine is the surest way to get long life. Changing the filter ALWAYS is the best approach.

You should change oil AND filter every three to six thousand miles. The problem with not doing it is that oil gets dirty, even with a filter and the combustion process contaminates the oil with acid. Let it go long enough and the filter clogs so there is no filtration of dirt and metal particles and the acid builds to the level that it eats away engine components leading to early engine failure. If you are having to add oil frequently then you either have a leaky gasket somewhere or the acid and dirt have worn components to the point that your engine is burning oil. If you see a bluish smoke coming from your exhaust you are burning oil.

The company can tell you anything to sell you the product. Where will they be when your engine calfs. Not a good idea to leave the oil that long. The oil base does not break down, however the engine will accumulate sludge & contaminates that will break down the additive within the oil. I would recommend the oil be change as prescribed by the engine manufacturer. Keeping the engine free of sludge & deposits is your #1 concern, not by claims by the lubricant company.

The oil filter should be changed ever time the engine oil is changed. It makes no sense on pumping a pint of cruddy oil into your fresh oil.

I had an opportunity to talk with a Fram Filter rep. not long ago. One of the things I learned from him was that the paper element in the filter will become 'fatigued' and will colapse. This depends on the quality and construction of the filter too. Once the filter is clogged or has colapsed, the oil is rerouted to bypass the filter.

well you know that an oil filter only costs a few dollars and yes i would change it when i did a oil change as for now? you would be good to change it but remember to put some oil in filter before you replace it back to motor to keep from having aditional wear on parts that need oil as soon as engine cranks. check level after change

Changing the filter is the most important part of an oil change. If you don't change the filter, you might as well not change the oil. The filter traps metal shavings and deposits so they don't travel through your engine and damage it. If it is full, it can't do it's job.

first of all a km is .61 miles so its good for about 6100 miles not 15000. second ALWAYS change your filter with every oil change. also about every third oil change its probably a good idea to have your air filter changed as well. i would say just this once wont cause you problems just check your oil every other week or every week if it uses oil and keep it full if it starts looking dirty then have it changed with the filter
