Depends on the type & make of car, but generally your talking about £100-150. Its a pretty straight forward repair that a second year apprentice could do.

Yes. It means draining the oil, removing the engine block head. Removing the Camshaft. Replacing the Tappets, Oil filter and Gaskets. So after taking the Engine Block apart, removing the Gasket, Camshaft and Tappets then replacing them . You are talking about a couple of hours work as well as the cost of the parts. Tappets are precision made and have to be put in in the correct sequence as well as aligning to the Camshaft so it's almost the cost of a reconditioned engine. Anything to do with the replacement parts of an engine is a big job. Apart from Spark plugs, Oil filter and Gaskets. Plus the replacement of all the oil. Then you've got 17 1/2% VAT. Start taking out a second mortgage. Unless you learn to do it yourself.

it depends on the engine, if its a conventional push rod engine (ohv) then no, not really, pretty simple straight forward job, if its got an overhead cam or 2, it can get more involved, but it still depends on the car, some you can get a tool for that allows the removal of the tapetts without removing the camshaft, for a small donation, you local friendly mechanic may lend you a tool to do the job with. there are forums specialist to virtually all car makes and models with at least 1 person having done that sort of thing before, you're probably best searching yahoo for whatever breed of car/van/truck you're working on and asking in a forum about it, might have been more helpful if you'd said what it was on.

Hydraulic rocker arms are not a big job. If you replace the rocker arms, the push rods should be replaced. The ends tend to wear differently on each rocker arm.

Ford & Dodge rocker arms are preset [just tighten down].
GM must be adjusted & can be a messy job. Normally adjust with the engine running. If you have an old pair of valve covers, remove a strip from the to between the filler & PCV port just wide enough to fit a socket through.

Tighten or loosen rocker arm until starts or stops clacking, then tighten 1/4 turn.

Hi

As a general rule, you need to remove the camshaft(s) to renew the tappets, unless the design of your cylinder head dictates otherwise.

If you don't have a lot of experience with engines or don't have any experience with timing belts, then leave it to someone else or you could end up needing more than a set of tappets!!

p.s. try engine flush first if they are noisy and then use a clean thicker oil .

Yes, it is on most engines, especially v6 or v8 engines.
