From http://www.nfcg.org.uk/ConsNews/cn188p07.htm

67,000 people go to casualty departments every year because of accidents with packaging. This costs the NHS £12m.

Those figures are about 10 years old now so it may have changed.

From a personal injury claim website:

Six out of ten - or more than 150 people a day - have accidentally stabbed themselves when trying to prise the top off a jar or opening a ready meal with a knife. The survey by Yours Magazine, which conducted a poll of 2000 over-50s, discovered the most common injuries were cuts and bruises to the hand, while the most hated items include anything shrink-wrapped such as cheese, bleach bottles, as well as jars and ring-pull cans.

But stranger than that - the same article says that 37 people were injured by tea-cosies in 1999!

In-store tampering and theft are the reasons for the tough packaging. I now keep a utility knife on the coffee table. It's a shame that it needs to be done but I like finding all the screws and nuts inside the package when I open it.

Packaging is definitely getting harder to open. One of the reasons is that they want it tamper proof. I have ruined many an ink pen opening stuff up. I agree with you completely.

Well, I say thanks to God with a lot of things and you'll never notice because I don't put my hands together and kneel beside my bed, or sit in front of my plate with my eyes closed. Prayer isn't how formal you can appear to the outside world, that's phony. I might be praying as I'm stuffing my face sometimes or gulping down the water.

The reason I believe, they are making it harder for thief to break in packages in the stores. So the longer it takes them the better of the chance they will get caught.
