Usually running out of virtual memory means that you are running too many applications at the same time for your system or one of them is attempting to use too much memory.

Increasing virtual memory is one way of compensating for lack of RAM. However, it's optimum should be set at 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your computer. Virtual memory can be increased, but it comes with a risk if you increase it too much as it can eventually lead to hard drive damage.

To increase VM on Windows XP (should be in similar locations for other versions) look in Control Panel: System, Advanced, Performance Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory.

You can see if your computer can handle more RAM at http://www.crucial.com/index.asp

Note: The presence of Malware (viruses, spyware, etc) can also eat up your system resources.

You can increase your virtual memory up to 3 times the amount of RAM you have (but its better if you can afford more RAM)

You didn't indicate what operating system you are running. On Windows XP look in Control Panel: System, Advanced, Performance Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory. I believe it's in a similar location in other versions of Windows.

Your virtual memory should be about 1½ to 2× the size of your RAM and you should use something like Diskeeper to make sure that your virtual memory isn't fragmented.

If you are being told your virtual memory is low, you need to "clean" your hard drive. Virtual memory runs off of hard disk space. If you can get by with uninstalling some unused programs, do so, and be sure to defragment your hard drive after doing so. If you cant, then you need to purchase a bigger hard drive.

it depends on how much physical RAM you have

if you have 256mb physical RAM set virtual memory to 512mb
if you have 512mb physical RAM set virtual memory to 1024mb
if you have 1024mb physical RAM set virtual memory to 1536mb
if you have 2048mb physical RAM set virtual memory to 3072mb
if you have 3072mb physical RAM set virtual memory to windows managed size cos you dont really need virtual memory that much

1. Off-load your pics, vids, & music to dvd/cds
2. Uninstall programs you don't need nor want
3. Run your anti-virus and malware programs
4. Run Disk cleaner
5. Run disk defrag
6. Try to limit your running programs to what you need.

Good Luck
