A CD can store a maximum of 700 MB. This does vary depending on the make of the blank CD as some will only store 650 MB. Also, it is best to not record the maximum amount of data to avoid burning errors although this is less of a problem now that burning software and blank media have improved.
You will need to burn a blank DVD if you want to store 4.38 GB of data and with that you are right at the limit of the DVD.
Consider dividing your data into two separate folders then burning 2 separate DVD blanks to ensure forward looking readability.
Dual layer DVD media is another option but these discs and associated burners have been reported to be much less reliable than single layer DVD's for burning purposes.

That depends. The Knoppix CD has about 2 GB of compressed data on it. They know what they are doing, though. I would say if you researched it thoroughly you should be able to figure out how to do it. Right off the top of my head I would split it up and use seven CDRs or a DVDR, though.

700 Mb is the limit of storage space on a CD-R - you've got almost seven times that. You would even be pushing it to get it onto a DVD-R, if you have a DVD writer. Split it up and burn it to a number of CD's, or transfer it to a spare hard drive that is not in use or buy an external hard drive to store it.

There are approximately 1024MB in one GB so the opposite is that if you need to store 4.34gigabytes on disc then you will need approximately 6 cd-r's. There cheap, you can buy 50 at Wal*Mart for 14-17 dollars.
