They are 1 in the same! Babe Ruth. Not even close and I'll tell you why. YOu asked who was the greatest Baseball player, that means complete player, not just hitter or pitcher. Well. one couild argue that Ruth was the greatest hitter, 714 HR's, .343 BA ect......but how many people realize he was the greatest Left handed pitcher of his era before being moved to the OF because of his bat. Ruth pitched 3 Shut outs in a row in the world series and still holds the record of 27 consecutive scoreless innings pitched in world series play I believe. He won 20 games in a season twice in the 5 years he was used as a pitcher. Also take into account that while he was a pitcher he was not used as an every day player and was missing AB's. HIs HR totals from 1914-1918 were 0,4,3,2,and 11. His next season he was moved between pitching and OF, playing in 130 games and hit 29. Then 56 in 1920. He probably missed out on about 100-120 HR's because of his greatness as a pitcher. Sorry folks, there just has never been a complete player that comes anywhere near Ruth. There may have been a couple who you could argue were better hitters, and I will gladly take Ruth in that arguement, or better pitchers, and yes there are, but Ruth didn't pitch his whole career either, but no one compares as a player!

Babe Ruth is by far the greatest baseball player in Yankee history and the most important baseball figure ever. He owned almost all the records at some point and still holds some of them. He could pitch too.
He also is almost singlehandly responsible for making baseball into a big time sport, one of the first stars on and off the field in any American sport. Before he came along horse racing was more popular and to this day he's the standard that all others are compared against.

Ty Cobb was the greatest ball player and his hitting stats and records back that up.

The greatest Yankee player was Lou Gehrig. Babe Ruth will always be the most popular Yankee player.

Greatest player ever was Willie Mays, and the greatest yankee ever was Babe Ruth - despite the fact Ruth was under-utilized by Yankee management, and Boston management.

Babe Ruth because he was a great hitter and a great pitcher. Now if you want to talk about the modern era, I would have to say Jose Oquendo because he was a utility man and played all positions.

Greatest Yankee of all time? Wow thats completely subjective, everyone has "their" guy. For my money its Donnie Baseball (Don Mattingly)

A question like this is best left to the fan himself. Every fan has his own ideas as to what is best and the greatest of all time. Ask a hundred different people and you could get 50 different answers, or more. Arguments, as to the best, could be made for Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Mickey Mantle, as well as many others. Your question would be better served if you were more specific as to what you would like to know. Such as, "What pitcher would you take first if you were picking an all-star team", or, "Who would you pick if you had to have a homerun" You should at least narrow it down between pitching, hitting, offense, defense and when they played.

Babe Ruth on both counts.

But some of these responses puzzle me. I mean, I hate the Yankees and even I can't deny that Ruth is the greatest of all time.
