The luxury level of a fledgling society starts out very low. As time progresses the societie's population expands and technological advancements are made which can equate to a rise in the standard of living. Over generations if the standard of living continues to rise then each newborn baby will be brought up in an environment with more and more to offer them. The question is what are you entitled to? Entitlement is the fundamental perception that you are superior.

Imagine two people, one living in 1900 and the other living in 1990. The person brought up in 1900 also surely experienced greed, but he didn't experience that concept the same way someone in 1990 would have.

The person in 1900 may have had a room with a bed and a dresser and some clothes, and someone in 1990 may have a room with a bed, dresser, clothes, stereo, t.v., telephone, electricity, and computer. Lets pretend that both of these imaginary individuals want more than they currently have. The one from 1900 wants a new book to read and the person in 1990 wants a new video game, a movie, a new car, and some clothes. Why does the person in this generation want so much stuff?

The level of WEALTH and MATERIALISM and ADVERTISING in 1990 is abhorrently magnified over that of those same 3 categories in 1900. Those 3 categories have been pushed into our minds since we could watch the television or read a magazine. Capitalistic society tells us its okay to want things and that you should get what you want.

Greed is wanting more than you need. In the modern day it is the fear of losing luxury and in return having to take on more responsibility. It is the result of ignorance on the part of the wealthy against those in third world countries who don't even have the necessities to survive. Greed is fueled by capitalism and advertising and ignorance. It is not contagious like the flu, but it can be addictive if you choose to follow the lifestyle of materialism.

yes. always has been. the more you have the more you want. seems to be the way society goes. for awhile we can control our greed but after awhile it starts to control us. history has shown that to be true and greed has been the downfall of many nations over the years.

I believe it feeds on others who may be weak and aspire to have what others have because they are not comfortable with who they are.Greed is not confined to money alone.

I think it can be in situations where there are people that do not have much, so they fight over something instead of sharing.
