... including a large truck bombing Saturday that ripped through an outdoor market and buried victims in rubble.

The U.S. military on Saturday also reported that six American service members were killed in fighting in Baghdad and western Anbar province over two days, reflecting the increased U.S. death toll that has come with the new offensives."

I also watched a report on the "hidden" victims - those who are injured in these attacks, many of whom are children who lose at least one limb. The prosthesis makers are working overtime.

Now Australia is also coming under the gaze of the terrorists because of our PM's devoted support for Bush.

How many more deaths and maimings? What will it take to make Mr Bush realise he is not John Wayne and this is one fight the guys in white hats are not going to win?

Anyone have any realistic ideas as to how this tragedy might actually end?

I said REALISTIC ideas, not personal insults which are childish and don't get anyone anywhere. It will take courage to admit defeat and leave - the US has done it before in Vietnam. Does your current leader have the guts or will he leave it to his successor?

hah. I'm sure Bush won't admit that invading Iraq was a stupid idea. He'll leave this awful mess for someone else to clean up.

It breaks my heart that we invaded Iraq - we should have been concentrating on the Taliban in Afghanistan and Al Quadea everywhere else. Instead, Bush let Cheney and Rumsfeld get the bit between their teeth. It was these two who pushed the stupid 'weapons of mass destruction' ploy, 'Hussein buying yellowcake in Africa,' Iraqis meeting Al Quedae operatives in the Czech Republic; - all of this 'evidence' was refuted while the debate over the invasion was going on.

And of course, now we know that no weapons of mass destruction were found, no plan to purchase enriched uranium from Niger, no meeting of conspirators in Czech Repub. No reason to derail the war on terror to invade Iraq.

But, if you want to point fingers, don't forget Rupert Murdoch.. His channel Fox News was the propaganda machine. Selling of the idea of invading Iraq was done with his enthusiastic support.

If I were kind, I would say that Cheney and Rumsfeld really felt that all they needed to do was remove Hussein and Iraq would stand up on its own. If so, they grossly underestimated the enmity between the Sunni and Shite factions.

Tragically, an unbelievable number of Iraqi civilians have been caught in the crossfire. More to come too.... Sorry, I don't have a rosy picture of how the Iraq war will end.

How is this going to end? Once we pull out of Iraq it will end with a newspaper article that reads something like this:

"A string of suicide bombings killed at least 73 people and wounded dozens north of Los Angeles including a large truck bombing Saturday that ripped through an outdoor market and buried victims in rubble.

The U.S. military on Saturday also reported that six American service members were killed in fighting in Phoenix and western Arizona over two days, reflecting the increased U.S. death toll that has come with the new offensives."

P.S. sorry, I see you're an Austrailian. Substitute Sydney for LA. Same deal.

P.P.S. It takes courage to stand up for what you believe in. And Vietnam is exactly one reason why we should not just pack it up and come home. Vietnam proved that the whole guerilla style of warfare works, and is the model the terrorists are using against civilised societies now. So what if we had pulled out of World War II when the Japanese were knocking on your doorstep. Do you think they would have just stopped and let you live in peace after they invaded New Zealand? You would be speaking freakin Japanese now. Had we not stood up to Communism the world economy would be in the tank and all people would be equal...equally poor and oppressed that is.

So much of the world that curses the U.S. now were begging us to save them not all that long ago. Heck, we did our best to stay OUT of World Wars I and II and where did that get us. It got us a bunch of sunken ships by U-boats and a bunch of our boys shot up and bombed on a lazy Sunday morning. We didn't go after Al Qaeda when we had the chance in the 90's and where did that get us? It got us a couple of planes rammed down our throats. Be careful what you wish for. If the U.S. decided to go back to isolationism, you would have to deal with all this on your own. And don't for a second think they won't be coming 'Down Under'.

So where will it end? If we keep our resolve, it will end like it did with Japan and Germany who are now economic powerhouses and partners in world leadership. The Soviet style of oppressive communism came crashing down with the Wall. All of those outcomes took TIME and AMERICAN SACRIFICE. I say it was worth it to allow more of the world to live in freedom. However, if we pull out now, well, see my newspaper article above.

I have to agree with the first 2 posters. Do you think these suicide bombings of innocent people will stop if the soldiers from America and other countries came home? No they will continue there and the terrorist groups will have more free time to come fight on our soil because they wont be fighting on their own anymore.
