Is it possible to manipulate your way through life....leaving the impression upon others that you so desire...to acquire...an empire...so long as you love...nothing...?

No, psychopaths do much worse...
Sociopath? Maybe...

Perhaps the person does not desire to love nothing. Perhaps the person actually wishes he could love...at least something.

If you will, differentiate between "love" and "desire."
It is possible to desire something, but still not love anything. One could even hate what he desires, or at least be ambivalent in the sense of love.

I'm coming to the conclusion that those who love do so from the heart, and it is not necessarily acquired. It it probably inate, but it can be either nurtured, left alone to be as it exists inately, or...it can be crushed.

Perhaps in those in whom it is not crushed lies an inability to perceive the essence of this question.

I didn't try to suggest that the absence of love IS ULTIMATE freedom, but rather the ultimate EXPRESSION of freedom. Use of the word "expression" implies the limitations brought on by human constraints and potentials on an person by person basis.

Life after death? Perhaps, if you consider residing in a sealed coffin for a few hundred years, then being eaten by worms and insects as existence...then yes, there is life after death.

No, Dominique Francon not only loves, but worships at the feet of the greatness possible within man.
This allows (and causes) her to loathe / despise practically everything else. Not a good comparison to what I'm talking about.

Who, then, are most free? The poet had Prospero lose his duchy first. Then, from nothing, poetic manipulation leading to the sublime. I'd rather have eyes like the poet, seeing the possibility of others' happiness through my "manipulation". That's something...and something will ineluctably surpass nothing, just as those who can think and imagine beyond their own selves will find a way to love what is worthy of life, thereby redeeming themselves and it.

Desiring to get rid of desires is also a desire. Unless one desires something it cannot be achieved. Therefore a desireless condition is difficult to achieve. However as it appears from the austere living practiced by sages of India a great measure of self control and freedom from most physical desires is possible. Now what good is achieved by achieving this stage in life is beyond me. Even if there is life after death will the desireless state achieved here take us to a better life after death.

If you have read Ayn Rand's the fountainhead, that seems to be the answer taken by Dominique Francon.

Personally I dont believe there can ever be true freedom. Maybe nirvana. But I wouldnt bet on it.

Hi Ron U,
When you love someone you "feel free", you feel beautiful, and you know the understanding of truth and trust more.... At least that's how it is with me....
>>>>>
Loving nothing, it is impossible, even if you don't love yourself, you will love always something..in life....a painting ..etc..
>>>>>>
Freedom, is a liberation from all desires.... One is free from the wheel of cause and effect, and is in complete harmony with the universe..... But not without, love... :)
>>>>>>
Probably, not the answer you are looking for.. but, that's my opinion .. :)

Thanks, for the question! :)

My regards!

Take care!
