Republican Congressional leaders filed into the Oval Office to meet with President George W. Bush and talk about renewing the controversial USA Patriot Act.
Several provisions of the act, passed in the shell shocked period immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, caused enough anger that liberal groups like the American Civil Liberties Union had joined forces with prominent conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly and Bob Barr to oppose renewal.
GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.
“I don’t give a goddamn,” Bush retorted. “I’m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.”
“Mr. President,” one aide in the meeting said. “There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.”
“Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”
I’ve talked to three people present for the meeting that day and they all confirm that the President of the United States called the Constitution “a goddamned piece of paper.”
And, to the Bush Administration, the Constitution of the United States is little more than toilet paper stained from all the **** that this group of power-mad despots have dumped on the freedoms that “goddamned piece of paper” used to guarantee.
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, while still White House counsel, wrote that the “Constitution is an outdated document.”

And also for the poster about Pelosi-we've been through this, there was republican Sentor delgation In Damascus three days earlier, so why the Hypocracy?

The accusation that the Rep. celebration would not stand for something clean, on an identical time as real, isn't new or constrained to that celebration. Political events on a countrywide scale that have applicants working in very distinctive political climates continuously finally end up with a mush of watered-down concepts. by using your use of the word "glittering generalities" i'm questioning in case you have already studied those products, because of the fact that is an insider term to political technological understanding, yet: that is totally confusing for a Democrat working in, say, Idaho, to win on a expert-decision, professional-environment platform. yet a Republican in California in basic terms approximately should be those issues to win... So there are professional and anti gun Republicans and Democrats. There are professional and anti abortion from the two events. Ditto very just about each and every important subject. The management of the celebration and the vocal individuals with public interest and following at the instant are not inevitably the celebration. celebration activists and voters are additionally the celebration. So the Republican celebration at this ingredient stands for, i could say: constrained government, decreased taxation, secure practices for gun vendors, and powerful protection stress, alongside with opposition to gay marriage and abortion, plus greater suitable border enforcement. those have been subject concerns that the Repubs have caught with for it sluggish and could greater or much less be that way interior the foreseeable destiny.

Please give an example, I honestly don't think you can.

While we are on the subject, look at the Democrat Party for a moment.

#1 Gun Control - Clear Violation of 2nd ammendment.
#2 Fairness Doctrine - Unconstitutional as per the 1st ammendment.
Hell I'm not even going to waste my time with the rest. Good day.

Do you mean gun control that violates the 2nd Amendment or the Fairness Doctrine which violates the 1st Amendment, or Imminent Domain which strips away property rights

No these REAL violations of the Constitution are brought to you courtesy of the Democratic Party.

Democrats see full constitutional rights for enemy combatants and gay marriage but they are imaginary; visible only to the extreme left.

The Republican Party, no.

The "neo-conservative" religious right that hijacked the GOP--yes. And its nt new--they've been advocating the destruction of the Constitution for over 25 years. Its just that most Americans are too good-natured to take them seriously until we got our collective noses rubbed in the reality.

I'll bet you haven't even read the Constitution. Better yet, I'll bet you can't talk smart about the Bill of Rights!!

If someone is shredding the Constitution, you may want to look at the Democratic party. Pelosi just returned form a trip to Syria, a trip which was FORBIDDEN under the Constitution. Elected officials have seemingly forgotten that they are supposed to represent us, the people. They are currently representing each themselves.

The Constitution, especially the Bill of Rights, is too liberal for the likes of George Bush and his cronies.

Dick Cheney has attempted to blur the line between legislative and executive branches, to suit his needs.

Bush and his "Justice" Department violated the Search and Seizure clause of the Fourth Amendment with his Homeland (in)Security Act. What should have been an emergency, limited measure has now given the Bushies carte blanch to violate Americans' civil liberties.

As to Bush's control over the court system, he used the Supreme Court to win the 2000 election; and he will continue to use his pardon power to release all of his convicted cronies.

It is ironic that people were fearful of speaking out against Bush just after 9/11, for fear they would be branded unpatriotic. These days, if you follow Bush, you are against the US Constitution. The worm has turned...

Care to find out exactly who voted and have supported the Patriot Act? If that's what you're referring to, WAKE UP! :)

And for all of those who are going to jump onto your bandwagon and point the fingers at one party, check your own parties out before wasting your time.

We've been bought and sold and that's a fact.

Not really, any more than Christians stand for attacking small countries with bombs. There are still respectable Republicans out there, and respectable Christians, too.
