1. Sulphur is a non-metal. No charge.

Sulphur is the pure element sulphur.
The sulphate "radical" (or ion) has an atom of sulphur and four atoms of oxygen with (if i remember correctly) two electrons as well. Thus copper sulphate is
CuSO4
"-ite" has one less oxygen atom than "-ate", so a "sulphite" compound contains the SO3 group.
Chlorine is the element chlorine, but when it's joined to something else in a compound we say chloride. Thus calcium chloride is a compound of calcium and chlorine only:

good qustn.........sulphates,sulphites are the salts of sulphur..and chloride is salt of chlorine.......these elemts are in crude form and are obtained by different methods of lab....
we also get these mixed or salts by chemical reactions...
a general reaction says that if we react a acid with a base we get salt and water.....
for ex:-
NaoH+Hcl (gives)------Nacl+ water
so frm above example it is clear that naoh which is abase as it has *OH* group attached to it when reacts with hcl which is a acid as it is *H* group atttached to it gives nacl which is a salt of chloride..in its crude form.......
there are mant therios on classification of salt and acid and bases....

different oxidation numbers of the sulfur atom. several answers have given the formulae of these ions - you can work out the formal charge on the sulfur by assuming oxygen is -2 (this almost always works). redox reactions transform between the various states.
