Depend on your perspective of things. For example, the computer age with all it scanners and everthing will help you do groceries and banking faster, but what happens where there is a power failure? Everything comes to a grinding HALT. This did NOT happen in the days when the grocery and the bank used mechanical means to tally things.

The strange answer is "both". Science can be used for good or evil, for healing, or for destroying. Science created penicillin... and nerve gas... its a very mixed bag, but I think it does more good than harm, and it isn't really "science" that is to blame - its the applications OF science by humans that turns out be good or evil.
