Hello,
Well first of all, if you are a virgin they might hurt a little, I know they did for me. You should definately start with a smaller tampon with a PLASTIC applicator. They are way easy to insert.

What you do is face the toilet (like a boy), put one leg up on the seat, RELAX and open your "lips" with one hand and with the other slowly insert the applicator into your vagina. When your fingers are touching your skin you push the applicator up and the applicator will push the tampon the rest of the way in and then all you do is pull the applicator out and throw it away and your ready to go :) When properly inserted you shouldn't feel a thing, only the string between your legs.

I always use regular maxis, the thin ones of course, i prefer ALWAYS. I use tampons only on special nights out, or when I go swimming :)

I hope this helped.

P.S. This link has a good picture of what I just described :)

Hi, firstly get the ones with the applicator bit, its not so messy and is alot more comfortable.
If its making you sore it maybe that there not for you! i had the same problem and was told to stay clear due to TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME! I find the pads alot my comfortable and safe!
In the Tampon packets they have clear instructions on what to do.

If you decide to go for tampons i def suggest the ones with the applicator and stick to a good brand.

Ok, this is what you do, squat in the bathroom and when you are pushing it in do it like you are pushing it in backwards because if you do it straightwards it hurts and that means it is going the wrong way, relax when you are doing it, push it until you can't feel anything, if you stand up and you still feel it is not in all the way, you are not supposed to feel it because the area it should be does not have any nerves.
Try it using tampons it is the best thing, you always feel clean, dont forget the string should still hang outside.

It does take practise! That's normal so don't worry.

Once you master it - you will find that you prefer them i think. They are much more hygienic.

Start practising when you have your period. Start with the applicator type, in the smallest size - eg - Tampax Lites or Mini.

Sit on the toilet and relax. Sometimes slightly raising your bottom from the toilet seat will help. Alternatively, you could stand over a mirror to assist you.

Good luck and don't give up - you will get there in the end!

Make sure you use the right one in terms of absorbency. So, if you have regular bleeding use a regular Tampax not a super as that could make you sore. Try Tampax Compac - they have a plastic applicator which make insertion smooth. Make sure that you put it in far enough - it will feel uncomfortable if you don't. Try practising with a light flow (purple) Tampax - they are much smaller. Persevere - you will get used to them but it may take a few goes. Don't be scared to ask mum or your friends.

I find pads much easier to use too. I've never been able to insert a tampon, but it is important that you relax when doing it (so I've been told).
I know all my friends prefer tampons, but I don't see it.
I think its just a case of trying till you succeed.

Buy tampons that come with an applicator. It makes it much easier to insert. Also try inserting it after a shower/bath as your muscles will be more relaxed.

Have you thought of trying a Mooncup. They're not quite like tampons as they don't have chemicals (more like a little vial that catches the blood) - it could be the chemicals that make you sore.

Keep one leg on the floor and put the other on the toilet seat.
When inserting one remember that you need to push it in towards the small of your back, at an angle, possibly 45 degrees, change the angle until it slides in,
push up until it stops - this means it has reached the cervix and is positioned correctly.

Keep practising it only when your on your period though.

Did you follow the directions?

Remeber to Relax. It won't work if you are tense.
Use tampons with plastic applicators.
Make sure it is all the way inside. (That's probably why it hurt in the first place--it wasn't in all the way)
