Drained the engine oil and found that it stinks of petrol! i take it this isn't normal. Any help on how it got there would be great.

Forgot to turn off the fuel petcocks? Lots of short trips motor not heating up enough for the fuel to evaporate. Gasoline leaking from bad needle and seat valve in the carbs. I would of had the oil analyzed or just changed it. Then when unscrewing the dip stuck smell it to see if the petrol in crank case returns. AND if you have a center stand use it when parking and turn the fuel off each time you stop.

If you don't turn the fuel tap off then fuel continues to flow to the carbs. The float bowls then overflow down through the inlet valves past the piston rings and into the crank. On a long ride the fuel would partly evaporate but the worst it can do is to dilute the engine oil and cause corrosion in the crank as it de greases anything it lies on.

Turn the fuel tap to off when parked. If that does not cure it then you have a needle valve in one of the carbs sticking open slightly.
