I don't feel comfortable with my virus scan, so I don't feel secure if I just scan a torrent with my virus scan, so please tell me other ways of ensuring that a torrent in isohunt.com is safe.

You cannot be 100% sure, but there are steps you can take to ensure safety, in addition to scanning with your own AV program. First though, you must actually download the file (but do not execute it yet, of course).

+ Submit to http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html for a scan by many different antivirus engines.

+ (advanced) install a firewall and monitor the file's behavior. See if it attempts to connect to the internet.

+ (advanced) For more popular files, use a program called md5summer, which can generate a unique identifier called an MD5 hash. You can then paste this hash (which is composed of a number of characters) into a Google search to see if others have examined this exact same file.

You can't detect the virus until after the .torrent, unrar and install -- and this is my opinion. isohunt stays in business because he only hosts the info, not the downloads, so anything you download is a roll of the dice.

But, I've known tech guys that went so far as to try the software on swappable hard drives. One drive for trashing and one drive for everyday use. That was how you HAD to do things in the days before torrents because there were so many porno robots lurking at the pirate websites.

A torrent file form Isohunt (or anywhere else) is going to be safe. Because it is a "data" file, and not a program, no one has yet found a way to put in a virus with the actual torrent file.

Now, what the torrent file is used to download (the music, movie, etc) is a different issue. It can be literally anything. It claims to be a movie, but when you download it, it is a virus instead.

As there is absolutely no way to prevent this, there is no safe way to use torrent files for downloading.

Solution: Do not use torrent files. Buy the music, movie, program, etc instead from a legit source.

If you are worried about security issues then only buy products from recognised companies.
