Or should they be told harsh yet sincere advice, stripped of all varnish?

Which is better for them, and, if not always one way, when?

I committed a redundancy, not an oxymoron.

Anyway, my intent is clear enough, but thanks for the correction.

Just incase, the intent was to ask if we should be positive even when we don't believe in what we're saying.

Oh, Pat, no one is interested in you proving yourself unqualified to comment on what an intelligent question is.

That is an oxymoron! A contadiction in terms, but very interesting! Why not give this one a whirl in words and word play?

Positive encouragement cannot be disingenuous! But, but to answer your question, I prefer the unvarnished truth...I am Sagittarius! lol

i think that positive encouragement is important for the person ,so that person doesn't give up onTHEMSELVES (as opposed to whatever the current project is).

but, I think sincere advice is important, too.

My recipe for a friend or loved one would be
75% encouragement,
25% sincere advice.

but if you are their Teacher. .. then, maybe it should be the other way around.

so, for a parent say...50/50

how's that? : )

Peace,
~Laurie

^It depends on the person and the situation. I prefer being honest, and people being honest with me if I ask them to be, but some people don't want to hear and/or can't handle the truth, so you have to sugar coat it.

Positive encouragement even if they are not to bright. Especially if they show a willingness to learn.

Don't you think there are times when one is necessary, and other times, when it is necessary to be firm, (but always loving)?
