Well, I live in India and people have really backward minds, and for some reason gay people are laughed at over here. These "Hindus" pray to their million and one "gods" and perform a pointless number of rituals, but when it comes to practicing what they preach - love for "God", they fail drastically.
Even for Christians and Muslims, it's the same case - they don't realize that it's NOT a choice...
If people believe so much in their "religion", why don't they understand that it is their very own respective "God" who has create gay people ??
So, what can we do to tell people all this, and minimize this prejudice and inequality ??

And, just so you know, I am not an atheist. I believe in God, but not "organized faith" or religion. I follow my own beliefs, and don't do stupid things like perform "rituals" for the sake of it. And, yes - I have been born into a Hindu family, but I've lost my own religion because I don't believe in it!

Okay, am also not asking for "complete acceptance", because I too agree that that's unrealistic. However, what I want is respect for them as well. How, even in my household, people were laughing at a picture of two gay guys holding hands, as a part of a "Rainbow Movement" or something like that.
To Dr.C.Shore : I just laughed in you face for being such a wimp, you know - it's people like you who have turned our world into the nightmare it is now !

All major religions will denounce homosexuality.as sin. get used to it. it is an apparent contradiction to nature for those on the other side of the divide.
they don't choose to be straight any more than we choose to be gay but the difference is that they dont have to wrestle with the idea
they feel no contradiction. Go out there get a girl and have a life. sounds great. there is a very slight resistance to those who don't settle down but if you admit you are gay it is a whole different matter. it is abomination. a freak of nature literally.
I sympathise with good people who are caught in their beliefs that homosexuality is wrong but only to the point where I remind all christians at least that it is a much higher sin to judge others than it is to break leviticus 18-22.
you need only check the number of times each is referenced in the bible, to see that a greater emphasis was placed on being kind loving and non-jugemental, and much more recently than the obscure refernces to specific sexual acts in the books of MOSES. (whose actual authorship has been in dispute for some time now )

Not much you can do to change the minds of those who have been brainwashed since childhood. I honestly think that people who have been brought up to feel this way just don't have the ability to understand this concept. It wasn't something that was force fed to them or drilled into their brains. You can get through to some of them... But at this point, I have realized that it is pointless to try to convince them that what they have been taught since they knew how to comprehend spoken words is wrong.
I am like you in that I believe there is a God, but I can not stand religion.

I think the more positive exposure to gays in the news and TV shows, sports, cop shows, politicians, and friends will help a lot. It is the unfamiliar that scares people. When they see that gays do not do anything weird (like scream at 2 PM every day or pop their eyeballs out and juggle them), I think they will realize they are normal.

I'm sorry to say but no matter what you do or say there are going to be people who hate gay people for no reason.
It's sad but that is the way things are, and I for one agree with you on believing in god but not organized religion.

Homophobia is a loaded word. A phobia is an irrational fear. Not everyone who things homosexual practice is not the ideal has an irrational fear. If you're looking for complete acceptance, it probably won't happen. If you're looking to be respected as a person, that should be given to you, but if you accuse everyone who doesn't give you unconditional acceptance as having an irrational fear, you're not being respectful either.

I dont think that you will find a sentence in either the bible or the koran where it says in any way that homosexuality is acceptable

People should get to know homosexuals to see that they are still people, no matter what they desire.
