I am a single mother of an 8 yr old boy. He has recently took interest in collecting baseball cards. I have no clue on how to help him. I how downloaded "collection explorer" and a price guide from tuff stuff website. He bought 300 cards and I have organized them using the software. There is one column that is labeled "set." His this for his reference or were the cards made in sets? If so how do I know what set it is? Could someone please help me to get started on this journey? He has became an ebay junky trying to buy more. I know he is buying worthless items, but it is what he wants. I'm not going to stop him as longs as he doesn't ask for a lot of money. I would love to hear any suggestions you may have.

First, try to find a sports card shop in your area. Eventhough,
he likes looking on Ebay for his cards if you have a very good
card dealer in your town You and your son can learn from the dealer. Unfortunately, in todays market it has been very expensive for young kids to buy packs of baseball cards especially if they want to find something that has some value.
If he likes collecting certain players or a favorite team then ask your dealer for what they call "common cards" in the trade. These are cards that are made in mass quantities and should be very inexpensive. So he can still collect the players he wants without much expense. Remember that he should learn to collect because of the fun and not just the fact he may have something valuable. The golden rule of collecting is that something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. and you may never get back what you may have paid for it.

A Set is a collection of cards that has all the cards collected from one specfic box of cards (ex: 2007 Upper Deck) If 2007 Upper Deck had 504 cards all together and your son had all 504 Cards then he would have a set of 2007 Upper Deck cards. Sets are very hard to make in certain brands because of the rookie cards now being very rare, so its very rare that the collecter would get a set through buying just a box. Some collecters sell Topps Company sets which are very easy to get but not worth as much. It all depends on what you get, mostly kids love the autograph and jersey cards these days

Cards are labeled in magazines or any other source in two ways. Each individual card has a number on the back of it. Each company produces a certain number of cards. A set is a collection of one of every card that particulat company produces. Most companies will sell sets pre-packaged, but mostly, you have to collect the cards through packs or through a dealer. If he plans to use ebay, would suggest he buy more than one at a time to save on shipping.

Ye True Rules Of Collecting:

1. Collect what YOU like.

1a. ...and can comfortably afford.

That's it.

If he's enjoying it, fine. If he's getting intoxicated with "book values" of his cards, well, bring that to a crashing halt. Price guides, and here Beckett Monthly is the standard, reflect merchant market prices -- what you might expect to pay from a dealer, and NOT what you might realize from selling the item. Cards are not a road to riches for the collector. Have fun, don't seek profit (profits are a nice bonus, but not worth chasing in this silly entertainment hobby).
