People in the middle ages probably had even less time than we do now - unless they were high born. They would also have less time to think creatively or dis-functionally!

Although “hysterical reactions to trauma” have been recorded throughout history, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a relatively new addition in psychological terms. PTSD was first diagnosed in soldiers, sailors, and airmen returning from armed conflict particularly at the end of the Vietnam War. There is conflicting evidence regarding numbers of people who develop PTSD after exposure to traumatic experiences; some percentages are quoted to be as high as 25% and others lower at 9%.

Anorexia and bulimia are also a relatively new conditions. But as psychology only developed in the 20th Century most introspection about the past is just that, introspection of past cases without the parameters of modern critical thought.
