I have a '72 charger and it has been sitting for a while.. When it was my daily driver I usually had to play with the carb to get it to start but now that dosent work. If I spray starter fluid on the air intake while cranking it, it will turn over but it cuts right off after that. I am not sure if it is just her age.. or there is something really wrong with it.. Any help would be appreciated. thanks!

Try tapping the side of the carburetor with the handle of a screwdriver. It sounds like the float is sticking! If it will run with starter fluid, you know that there is a fuel problem!

You can not see that the fuel pump is full of fuel, what you are looking at may be the fuel filter. They made a plastic in line fuel filter for that car. If you have a plastic fuel filter, look to see if fuel is actually flowing when you crank the car. If may be that the filter is full of fuel, but the check valve has stuck in a closed position. If you remove the fuel line from the filter (between the carb and the filter), put a container to catch the gas and crank the engine, you can see if there is actually fuel flow!

My bet would be a carburetor problem!

You didn't say how long it was sitting. After a few months, gasoline has a tedancy to turn to varnish. This could be your problem., and could be magnified, especially if you were also having carb. problems, when you stored the vehicle. If such is the case...first drain the gas tank, put in fresh fuel...couple gallons to try. Then clean the carb. You might want to have a mechanic do this. Before I forget.....Put on new gas filter!!!

check if fuel is getting to your to carb. if not it's probably the fuel pump maybe the float is sticking. also if it's been sitting for over a year with the gas still in it chances are the fuel has gone bad drain your tank clean it out replace the fuel filter it might be clogged

I'd say replace the fuel pump, and start a thorough cleaning/tuning of your engine and set-up. I won't even pretend to be as knowledgeable as the other guys who answer this question for you, lol.

Hopefully somebody's answer here helps you out. Get that baby going again! There's nothing sweeter than a nice early 70's Charger. Good luck.

just replace the fuel pump after setting the inside of the pump has deteriorated plus maybe the carb needs cleaning after awhile the carb will varnish up and the float will stick it is a better idea to use gas down carb than starting fluid can cause major hair loss and unwanted eye brow waxing replacing filter will help also..maybe try using carb cleaner in carb spray it working all linkages and down thru the carb use a lot let set and try starting it plus replace spark plugs wires cap rotor
