Such as in the mayan prophecies, how does the meteor in 2012 relate to mayan beliefs in your opinion?

well, its all speculation anyway, so why not make it as fun as possible?

I'm personally holding out for the possibility that some significant event, be it the end of the world or not, will come about on December 21, 2012.

For one thing their calendar prophesized the return of their greatest god, Quetzalcoatl in 1521 -- he would come in pale skin and strange dress from across the sea -- well, it wasn't our good mr. Quetzal but Hernando Cortes and his army of Spaniards. But the resemblance and timing are uncanny, no?

So why not say that the Maya calendar has predicted accurately some new event of significance, and they just bungled up the details...?

For those of you who don't know, The Mayan Calendar ends in the year 2012. Some people intrepret this as a Doomsday sign, but I'm not yet convinced.

I think our doom will come sometime between 2020 and 2030.

Our global population is already 6,700,000,000 people.
By 2010, it should be 7 Billion, and by 2020, 8 Billion.

By that point, disease and/or war will start moving that trend backwards. We are no different than raccoons or rats, or any other species that overpopulates. Just as rabies takes out an overpopulation of raccoons, some disease will eventually cause a pandemic.

Nuclear proliferation and terrorism will also probably factor into our downfall too.

There are also economic downfalls as well. The higher a population, the lower the wages go. Simple supply and demand. large populations drive down wages. Low wages turn into poor living environments which can breed crime and disease.

So have a pint or two. It will all be over soon.

What is being talked about is an interpretation of what the Mayans thought. May or may not be correct.

Personally I don't believe that the whole world will end in 2012. If it ends, well, there is nothing I can do.

The celestial alignments that the Mayan calendar *supposedly* predicts have occurred countless times in the past (..last was about 26,000 years ago..) and the world didn't end.

The predicted Apocalypse is pure hogwash and totally unsupported by any scientific evidence.
