I rent a old house with no ac.I am looking for a cooling system that does not require a window for a hose since the windows I have swing out and do not slide open. I cannont cut a hole in the wall since I am renting the place. Are there any portable a/c out there that can help me? any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

There are evaporative coolers, which are essentially a fan blowing across a wet filter. As long as you're not in a humid environment, these work fairly well. These are freestanding and require no external venting.

It seems counter-intuitive, but air conditioners have to generate to create cold, and this heat has to be expelled somewhere. So you're not going to find an air conditioner without some kind of external vent.

If an evaporative cooler doesn't work in your climate, I'd suggest going to the landlord and offering to split the cost to install a window unit -- either retrofitting a window for it, or cutting a hole in the wall (there are kits to wall mount window a/c's). If you're there more than a year, it's a worthwhile investment for you, and the landlord gets the added selling feature of a/c for future tenants.

you would be able to desire to confirm in case you ought to use a window ac first of all. I actual have had the two in a small mattress room. The vinyl window physique created a real undertaking, so this year, i offered a conveyable ac. I favourite the window one. The transportable ought to be vented to the window, no longer a large deal, it got here with each and every thing i wanted, even nonetheless it takes up lots of area. The water tank fills and you would be able to desire to empty it and, interior the process the night, it is a discomfort. in case you reside interior the south, the place it is totally humid, pass with a window unit. The portables act as dehumidifiers and except you prefer to empty 10 situations an afternoon/night, no longer a sturdy concept.

The portable units are new technology, and not put to the test of time yet. There's no way they can provide efficiency since the condenser coil is in the unit, inside the house. There's a rather small hose to vent the heat to the outside of your home instead of the entire coil and fan assembly being outdoors.
I'd recommend a ductless unit instead. There's no ductwork to install, but it would be rather permanent because there still has to be 2 small holes to allow the tubes to connect the outside unit to the inside unit.

If you do a yahoo search on "portable air conditioner" you'll get several listings... here is just one of them -- http://www.air-conditioners-america.com/default.asp

These portable air conditioners sit on your floor, or perhaps a table, and have flexible tubing that is run to the window. They often come with kits for the window itself.

Another option may be to have a 'dryer vent' run thru the wall, to connect to.

Good Luck

Sorry, all ac's have to be vented to the outside in one form or another. You have to get rid of the heat. They do make a 6 to 8,000 btu unit designed for casement windows. It does require removing a bottom pane of glass. It's only designed for one room. What did every other tennant do before you? Just kind of curious.

Yes there are portable self supporting a/c's we have one in our summer cottage but I cannot remember the name and I think it might be American Standard or Emerson. Just on on line and see what they have to offer but in and to your question I'm confident .
