No country can ban regional parties.
What we are facing in India is a situation where the smaller parties normally join forces and the elections are mostly 2 front elections. Sometimes we have a 3rd front too, but rare.
There would be so much more corruption in the major parties, if this were to happen. Yes there are down sides to both systems, but there are upsides too.
What could be probably done is to announce officially the affiliations and support before the results and not after. This will prevent horse trading and speculation candidature.
Also the PM, CM candidates should be announced before hand so there is some order in things, and people know who they are voting for.
There should be huge cuts on campaign budgets, because normally a candidate with just money power wins. It is not fair. They should stop campaigning weeks before elections, and the EC should cut budgets.
Also criminals should be kept away from politics. They should be asked to file an affidavit about their innocence which can be used against them in case they are convicted.
In case of those who are already convicted, they should not even come close to thinking of fighting an election. Currently the bar is for those who have spent a sentence of more than 2 years, which should be reviewed.
By the way, I am in favor of re-writing the constitution, which is nothing but an edited version of the British one. We should also re-write the police-act, the legal system and reform the reservation policy.
I feel reservation should be limited to making education free/discounted and giving a grace of say 15 to 20% marks. Beyond which the candidate should be competitive. Also this should be limited to 1 generation only. There should be no reservation in the jobs and promotions, especially where a human life is in danger. e.g. A doctor from reservation quota, or a pilot from reservation quota. Imagine what our politicians will do if they are required by law to get treated in govt. hospitals only, where many doctors are from reservation quota. These same politicians will then no longer support reservation anymore. Such is their hypocrisy.
Excuse my rambling, but I just had to say it.

I don't know why, but the US "two" party system was originally two coalitions of fifty different state parties. The Democrats used to have fistfights at the conventions, and the Republicans didn't really have a party in the south.
Just relax and it will come. Actually, an executive presidential system might help it along, but I'm not sure it would fit the Indian temperament. Do you want an executive presidency?

Even though there are many parties, no party is gaining majority in the Parliament and Assembly elections. Finally alliances are formed by like minded people. There may be two or three alliances comprising small political parties, regional parties and national parties. Instead of the conglomeration of various parties, two party system is beneficial to the democracy. One party is in ruling and the other is in the opposition. Thus both of them play constructive role in strengthening the democracy.

According to its constitution, India is a "sovereign social secular democratic republic;" the largest state with a democratically-elected government. Like the United States, India has a federal form of government, however, the central government in India has greater power in relation to its states, and its central government is patterned after the British parliamentary system.

No , not at any cost . India is a multi-cultural nation country . Multi-party system makes the concept of "one nation" stronger.
