By equal chance, I mean the same financial and social standing, job security and earning capacity. A classical example would be a young urban couple, both partners working in a similar position, drawing approximately equal salaries, away from parental influences and living an independent lifestyle. Out of both partners, which is more likely to go for a short-term fling.

They can be as equal as they want to be. If neither one is satisfied with each other they would both stray. Sometimes even if everything is on a equal playing field if you aren't emotionally happy, bored, or just fed up after a while. The lure of something much more attractive and appealling would lure any man or woman away.

Honestly.....I think both have the exact same ratio as to who would cheat and who wouldn't. Years, and years ago, it was always seen as well the Mr. stepped out on the Mrs., BUT he has a stressful job blah, blah, blah, and the little lady was a stay at home Mom strapped down with 6 kids. Families don't work that way anymore. You said it yourself same financial stability etc. the little Mrs. has switched things up a little, and she has just as equal an opportunity to have an affair as the man does. So in this particular situation, I think alls fair in love and war.

You are complicating a simple psychological question with money and jobs. It has to do with proximity. There are more affairs in the work place than history can explain, but I can. Women and men are able to seek jobs today that causes them to cross paths at work. Secondly, bars are no longer the sleazy places they once were, therefore meeting someone is very likely. I don't call it promiscuity, I call it serial monogamy.

A man for sure. women are more likely to be content with what they have, and less likely to make a confrontation or a fight. It is the nature of men, a man needs to have religion or a good reason to have morals.

Man.

A woman's natural mothering instinct usually means that she seeks stability.

Whereas man wants to be a hunter whether it is for food, money, fame, sex.... whatever.

Of course, we are talking literal chances here and it is NOT to say that these roles don't reverse on occasion.

Man- while physical intimacy can be just as sacred and bonding for a man, it also can be used more often as stress relief and a fantasy fulfillment than for a woman.
