Most people fear the government in one way or another. They get that spot of fear when they see a cop driving near them, or the uneasy feeling as you open that envelope from the IRS that ISN'T your tax return, and many other things dealing with one government entity or another. But in general, most people obviously don't even think about the government or what they are doing let alone fear them. I fear where our nation, and the world, is going because big business and governments are so intertwined. If the people don't become aware and do their job, that is becoming educated about what your local up to your national political representatives are doing, we are all going to learn to fear the government in not to many more years.

I resist authority. I have a healthy respect for the power of government. Most of the people that I meet have fears of government. You are right to point out how liberty works.

Remember things like the Civil Defense Program? The concept of self-reliance and action at the personal level? There has been an effort of long standing to make people afraid to do for themselves, to rely on gov't. to do everything for them.
It is the same system that has been used for more than a hundred years to exterminate Native American cultures. Now it is turned on the ideals with which the majority of Americans over the age of 40 were raised.
Am I seeing bogey men under the bed? I think not. I think that there are a great number of our elected employees who not only delude themselves into thinking they are "leaders" but believe that the are somehow superior to the rest of the population, superior to those who actually do something useful, and that should cause us at least some fear.
I really like the evil orange's answer above.

The only time I get nervous and I wouldn't call it fear is when the Conservatives come into power. They have absolutely no respect for vulnerable people, the disabled, women, gays . Their homophobia and hypocritical "family values" don't help society out . Most are rankists and only care about their ' class' and their status and making $$$$ off the average working class and middle class' stiff's back.

Not me. I take the founding fathers' advice-I don't fear the government--but I don't trust it either.

Don't think the words are in the dictionary on what I think. We have more unnecessary control and loss of freedom by fear that our way of life is now the equivalent of a western communist state.

I do, but mostly from their inaction and also selling America to other countries.
Anyone who publicly points this out is made out to be an idiot by government officials and most of the media.
