Odd functions are functions for which f(-x) = - f(x), for example, y=x and y = x^3
Even functions are functions for which f(-x) = f(x), for example, y = x^2 and y = x^4

An even function has the same value for both + and - values of the same |x| (absolute value of x). An odd function has opposite sign value for -x as for +x (|x| the same in both cases). An even function is symmetrical (mirrors) about the y-axis. An odd function is symmetrical (looks the same) with respect to 180º rotation.

sin(x) is an odd function since sin(x) = -sin(-x)
cos(x) is an even function since cos(x) = cos(-x)
