Where did the phrase "taking some names" come from?

What is the origin of it? Like kickin some *** and takin some names.

Police work, probably - when one goes around getting information on people - taking a list of names of those involved.

I would imagine it would have to do with people dieing and taking names for the dead to report it to the next of kin.
