Ok...the first thing I would suggest is to eliminate the fractions. To do so you should multiply both sides by the highestst common denominator of both fractions. I would suggest multiplying the whole thing by 8, and solving for p from there.

1. 8 * (3/8 + p = 1/2)

2. 24/8 + 8p = 8/2

from here reduce the fractions to whole numbers.

3. 3 + 8p = 4

now subtract 3 from both sides

4. 3 (-3) + 8p = 4 -3

5. 8p = 1

now divide both sides by 8 to solve for p

6. (8p/8) = (1/8)

8/8 = 1 so you get p by itself

7. p = 1/8

now to test your solution put 1/8 in for p and plug it back into your original equation to see if it works out, if not then it's the wrong answer.

8. 3/8 + 1/8 = 1/2

add up the fractions...

9. 4/8 = 1/2

Simply reduce the fractions to the lowest common denominator in this case 2...

10. 4/8 = 2/4 = 1/2

11. So now 1/2 = 1/2 and you're answer is correct.

I hope this helps...

First thing we do is put the numbers on the right side of the equal sign. If we have a number on the left side of the equal sign, we bring it to the right side and change the sign

Therefore 3/8 + p = 1/2
p= 1/2 - 3/8

Now we need a common denominator. Once we get a common denominator, we subtract the numerators, and bring down the denominator.

So p = 1/2 - 3/8
p = 1/2(4/4) - 3/8(1/1)
p = 4/8 - 3/8
p = 1/8 or 0.125

p=1/2-3/8
p=1/8

You're solving for the variable, p. That is, you're trying to find a value for p such that the above equation holds true.

Begin by subtracting 3/8 from both sides to yield: p = 1/2 - 3/8.

Then, find the lowest common denominator, and rewrite your fractions: p= 4/8 - 3/8.

Therefore, p=1/8.

p = 1/2 - 3/8
now take the LCM of the two denominators which is 2,8 , LCM = 8
divide the LCM with each denominator, and multiply the answer with the numerator
so, 8/2 = 4 and 8/8 = 1
multiply 4 with the first numerator, 1, it will = 4, and 1 with the second numerator 3 = 3
p = (4 - 3) / 8
p = 1/8

You need a common denominator.. so 1/2 would become... 4/8, then subtract 3/8 from both sides and there you have it, you've solved for p!

u have 2 do the opposite of the sign which in this case is a + sign so u subtract 3/8 from each side...is that simplified enough?if not email me at dalmatianfest@yahoo.com
